Note from the President

Periodically I have updated this segment of the homepage, providing a list of teams we consulted with as well as my thoughts on the position based on our experiences during the season. Indeed this 2013-2014 season was equally productive for us in terms of reaching more goaltenders and researching the position to benefit those goaltenders than any other before it.

I was privileged enough to consult with the ECHL South Carolina Stingrays, the AA pro affiliate of the Boston Bruins. We won our division and were proud to boast the Coach of the Year and the Goaltender of the Year award winners. The opportunity to work with these two individuals this season was invaluable.

I continue to strive for improvement and progression as a true “student of the game.” My relationships and research with fellow Pro and Amateur goalies, goalie coaches, head coaches, and managers, provides me with real perspectives of each level of the game. Educating individuals and teams in not only the Maryland/Washington DC area, but in the Southeast, the Mid Atlantic, and now in the Midwest, provides you with the most well rounded and unique teaching philosophy you can find as a goaltender.

In an effort to scout, assess, and coach goaltenders, Coach Chrapala and I were again able to collectively attend over 150 hockey games and 18 showcases this season at various levels. We saw everything from Squirt games to NHL ones. We feel that this is vital to goaltender coaching. We get the position! GDI has long been at the forefront of development, aiding our goaltenders in many ways, including the opportunity to witness our goalies perform where it matters most…on the battle field.

Our approach, philosophy, and analysis of the position are founded on the following: our comprehensive curriculum, our experiences, our network, and our goaltenders.

Who better to prepare you for the next level of your game? We look forward to partnering with you this off season. Thank you.

Standard of Excellence

Our commitment to maintaining a high standard of excellence within our students, our business, and all of the products and services we offer is evident when working with us. This is due to the principles and habits that are at our core, foundation, and purpose. GDI’s previous mission to revolutionize the game and goaltending industry has taken shape. GDI brought change to the way things are done in the goaltending world, on the ice and in this competitive niche market. Through experience, GDI Southeast has grown tremendously. We have established a high quality standard and seek to exceed our clients’ expectations of what a goaltending school can be for all of those involved.

We will maintain GDI Southeast as a premier trainer and developer of goaltenders in our region while maintaining our uncompromising standard of excellence.

We will continue to be recognized as the most progressive training company for the development of career minded goaltenders. We will offer our clients continuously fresh and innovative products and services throughout the region by evolving from the GDI foundation of development and business.

GDI Midwest Launches

We are proud to announce our expansion to the Midwest Region of the United States by launching GDI Midwest!

As you are aware, President Ryan Honick has been consulting in the Midwest for many years, working GDI Prospect Camps, coaching with Premier Goaltender Development (PGD) in MN, and Midwest Goalie School (MWGS) in IL, making yearly trips to the NAHL and USHL showcases, scouting, and more. We believe that all goaltenders should be provided with elite level coaching and development. The opportunity and need for such a program has evolved in Chicago, IL. Coach Honick will relocate there in the fall to begin this endeavor and continue to satisfy a growing demand for top end consulting in the Midwest.

Partnering with Ryan will be John Rutledge, a very well respected and well known coach in the Chicagoland area. Johnny and Ryan will target a Regional Development Camp for the summer of 2015 but will immediately deliver comprehensive mentorship programs, individual lessons, clinics, and more. We have already partnered with many of the top associations in the city for next fall. We are honored to affiliate ourselves as the Goalie Coaches for the HPHL Team Illinois Midget teams, the HPHL Chicago Young Americans boys Bantam, PeeWee, and Squirt teams, the Falcons Hockey Association, the Rockford Hockey Club, and the prestigious Bauer Selects spring/summer program.

In addition to the staff, PDG Women’s Director and GDI Southeast Guest Coach Sanya Sandahl will be relocating from Minneapolis to Chicago as Director of Goaltending for the Chicago Young Americans Girls Program. She will also take on the role of Assistant Coach for their U19 College Prep and U12 Squirt teams. Sanya will round out our initial team to offer the girls in Chicago exactly what they have been missing.

Also, the USHL Green Bay Gamblers have hired Ryan as their Goaltending Coach for the 2014/2015 season. Ryan will travel into Green Bay twice a month to work with the goalies and coaches at practices and games. He will also consult with the local youth program. The USHL Chicago Steel had previously brought him in as a consultant in years past, but this position will provide the club with a more full time coach that will deliver a plan and structure of goaltender development, as well as a scout to assess goaltending talent for the organization.

Finally we will expand our extremely successful and one of a kind National Development Camp (NDC) to a Midwest location with the launch of GDI WEST for the summer of 2015. This elite level event brings together the best resources possible to offer the best camp possible and will be created in the same mold as the GDI EAST event presented at Quinnipiac University’s TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, CT. Expect a formal announcement in the coming weeks. Read EAST Wrap Up article

GDI Southeast will now be led by Jay Chrapala, current Operations Manager of our school. Jay will expand upon his role to include in and off season mentorship, lessons, camps, and association affiliations. What makes Jay unique compared to ALL other goalie coaches however, is his Physiological expertise. Jay is certified by the NSPA as a personal trainer and is also CPR and AED certified. He has consulted for Pioneer Corporate Health, 368 Fitness, and now is an official Strength & Conditioning Coach  for Launch Sport Performance, operated by Dr. Liz Wheeler and located in Rockville, MD. Jay will continue his personal dedication to the AYHL Team Maryland Organization as Director of Goaltending for a 3rd season (and 7th under GDI Southeast), as well as direct programming for many other clubs in the area. Jay is a very sought after coach due to his challenging drills, and the ability to communicate and motivate the top goaltenders in our family.

Coach Honick will administrate GDI Southeast and GDI Midwest programs as President and continue to be your primary point of contact for all of your goaltending needs. Ryan will also continue to monitor our clients in the East as well as make periodic visits to the area as 6th year Goaltending Consultant for the USPHL Jersey Hitmen.

This website and our social media platforms will begin to take shape over the coming months to consolidate the Southeast, EAST, Midwest, and WEST titles and programs.

We hope that you are as excited as we are for the creation of our new projects in the Midwest. As we continue to evolve our brand and business from our 2006 inception, new challenges bring new opportunities. An expanded network of goalies, teams, coaches, camp offerings, and programs will benefit all involved and bring our philosophy, experience, and expertise to a new market. By expanding locations, we will expand our family.

Teaching Philosophy

Our Philosophy is to adhere to GDI’s proven technical curriculum while allowing for the development of a goaltenders’ individual attributes that make them unique. This has always been our standard.

At GDI Southeast, we believe that once a goaltender establishes a strict and distinct base (fundamentals), that he must then have a unique approach to the position. While goaltending encompasses a vast array of technical, physiological and psychological inputs, each goalie assembles a distinct bundle of performance assets. When working with a goaltending client, our emphasis is to work within the confines of each one’s general approach. While there are fundamentals that must be instilled, and at all levels of play, GDI Southeast believes in working within the context of the specific athlete’s game. Why do we take this approach? “Goaltending style is a journey” – Ian Clark, GDI Founder

As a goaltending athlete progresses through a career, countless unique experiences and individuals are implanted upon this player’s game. Through these experiences, the goaltender begins to build an approach. This approach combines these experiences with core fundamentals plus the distinct strengths and limitations of the actual netminder. During a GDI Southeast experience, athletes will seek to hone, refine, and repackage this distinct approach. A combination of technical enhancements, physiological guidance, and exploration of the intangible side of goaltending will drive one’s game to a new level. That’s right, performance gains require a multi-faceted approach — technical, physiological, psychological, equipment — which is a hallmark of GDI tutelage and a sure-fire method of fast-tracking your game. At GDI Southeast, we are committed to performance enhancement. This enhancement is generated through the nurturing of a partnership between coach and athlete who together drive performance forward within the bounds of an already established goaltending approach.

Company History

Established in 1992, GDI is a world-leader in the development of hockey goaltenders. The tools and techniques developed by GDI have revolutionized the way that goalies play the game. Traditionally, GDI has conducted summer camps, in-season and off-season consulting programs and published an array of development resources and periodicals. Over the course of GDI’s history, its reputation has grown due to exceptional knowledge of the goaltending position and the ability to consistently convey that knowledge to coaches and goalies. Founder Ian Clark can be credited with establishing this unparalleled success and reputation. GM’s, Coaches, Scouts, and Agents from the NHL, Minor Pro, NCAA, Major Junior, and Junior A have come to rely on GDI for development, avocation, references, referrals, information, and placement through use of our vast network. GDI trained goalies can currently be found on over 20 NHL depth charts.

In 2006, with the addition of long time client and retired NY Ranger goaltender Dan Blackburn as Vice-President of Training Services, GDI took on the revolutionary task of deploying GDI worldwide in an effort to refine the goaltending industry’s fragmented marketplace. At its peak in 2009, GDI Regional Managers could be found in 15 areas of the US, Canada, and Europe. Their mission of leveraging GDI’s curriculum, quality, and philosophy was a successful endeavor as two brick and mortar GDI Training Centers were constructed, resources including an interactive website and the monthly periodical The Goalie News magazine flourished, and the GDI Gear line was launched. Most of these regions exist now, or have excelled under former GDI Coaches.

In 2010 the GDI Corporate entity closed in a managerial decision. Current GDI Presidents continue to develop their own companies while evolving their business foundations GDI lay in place, furthering our brand and network.

Launched in 2007 with the naming of Regional Manager Ryan Honick, GDI Southeast operates in the Mid Atlantic and Southeast regions of the US, while networking throughout North America and into Europe. GDI Southeast has established itself as a premier developer of goaltenders in its region.
